Journalism matters. I only met Norm Kent a handful of times, but each time he said to me: Journalism matters. One of his many legacies to South Florida and the LGBTQ+ community is local, LGBTQ+ focused journalism. Norm is gone. Norm’s paper, South Florida Gay News or SFGN, is also gone. What is not gone is journalism. Tomorrow, Out South Florida will launch its first edition, and I am proud to be joining the publication as Senior Reporter. We will continue to cover the good, bad, and the ugly of LGBTQ+. We will promote community events, like FlockFest’s beach party and fundraisers and Float-a-rama’s pre-Stonewall boat parade. We will cover new businesses moving into the area and make sure your voice is heard when it comes to redevelopment and its impact on LGBTQ+ culture. Out South Florida will also cover the stories many don’t want told. Sure you will learn about Republican-Fascist attacks on us, but we will also hold our own institutions accountable. Not because we want to, but because we *have* to. So tomorrow a new chapter begins, it will be the first draft of how we deal with the existential threats to our community. The mission is simple: Journalism Matters. #Queer Up South Florida Gay News
