Appoint Just 1 More LGBTQ+ Federal Judge And Joe Biden Will Make American History

Recent weeks have seen a significant milestone in LGBTQ+ representation with the Biden administration confirming Nicole Berner and Melissa DuBose to the federal judiciary. According to data from The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, eleven federal judges identifying as LGBTQ+ have been appointed and confirmed since the start of Biden's presidency, tying a record set during the Obama administration. So, in other words, the Biden administration has to appoint one more LGBTQ+ judge, and his name will be carved on the LGBTQ+ history of America forever for appointing the largest number of queer judges. However, despite this progress, addressing the representation gap for LGBTQ+ judges has only gained traction in the past three decades. Former President Bill Clinton appointed Deborah A. Batts as the first known LGBTQ+ federal judge in the US in 1994. During the Trump administration, only two LGBTQ+ individuals were confirmed as federal judges. CNN analysis of Federal Judicial Center data shows that as of March 12, 23 LGBTQ+ judges were serving on US federal courts. However, this number represents only about 3 per cent of the total 814 active federal judgeships. Interestingly, a 2023 Gallup survey reveals that the percentage of adults identifying as LGBTQ+ in the US has more than doubled in the past decade, now standing at 7.6 per cent of Americans. This highlights the growing diversity within the LGBTQ+ community and the importance of representation across various sectors, including the judiciary. Will Biden break the tie? #Queer Up Courts
