Australia-Iran Tensions Rise Over LGBTQ+ Instagram Post

Australia’s ambassador to Iran, Ian McConville, was summoned after the Australian embassy’s Instagram celebrated Wear It Purple Day, a pro-LGBTQ event. The post, shared on August 30, featured embassy staff wearing purple and enjoying cupcakes, promoting inclusivity for LGBTQ youth. It emphasized the importance of diversity and creating supportive environments. However, Iran’s foreign ministry deemed the post “norm-breaking” and accused it of “promoting homosexuality.” McConville clarified that the post was not intended to insult Iranian values and did not reference the Islamic Republic. Despite the controversy, the post remains on the embassy’s Instagram. #Queer Up The World View
