Broward prosecutors dropped charges against a West Palm Beach family accused of assaulting a gay man they believed made their son gay. Yevhen Makarenko, his wife, and his son were charged with attempted murder, burglary, and kidnapping, but no likelihood of conviction was found. The decision was taken based on evidence suggesting the defendants were not present during the attack. Attorney George Palaidis asserted his client's innocence, stating they were at home during the incident. In August 2021, deputies discovered a severely injured man in his Pompano Beach home, initially attributing his injuries to a fall. Days later, he disclosed to investigators that he had been brutally beaten by Oleh Makarenko and his family, allegedly due to his romantic involvement with Makarenko. Despite suffering significant injuries, including blindness, the victim delayed reporting the assault until February 2022. This delay resulted in the loss of crucial evidence, impeding the prosecution. Although investigators corroborated aspects of the victim's account, such as his relationship with Makarenko, they were unable to verify other details, including the defendant's presence at the scene. Assistant State Attorney Veronica Walker cited insufficient evidence as the reason for dropping the charges against Yevhen Makarenko, his wife Inna, and their son Oleh, who had initially faced charges of attempted murder, burglary, and kidnapping. #Queer Up Breaking News
