Cindy Ngamba Makes History as First Refugee Olympic Medalist

Cameroonian refugee Cindy Ngamba has made history as the first Refugee Olympic Team member to win a medal. Ngamba, based in the UK, secured a guaranteed bronze by defeating France's Davina Michel in the 75kg semi-finals on Sunday, August 4. Ngamba expressed her feelings saying, "It means the world to me to be the first ever refugee to win a medal. I’m a human, just like any other refugee and athlete all around the world." The Refugee Olympic Team, established in 2016, allows athletes displaced from their home countries to compete. Ngamba, who was the team’s flagbearer during the opening ceremony in Paris, moved to the UK at 10 but cannot compete for Team GB due to not having a British passport. Being gay, she can't return to Cameroon, as homosexuality is a crime in that country. Ngamba hopes her achievement inspires others. She said, "To all the refugees around the world, keep believing.” #Queer Up The World View
