In a controversial move, Colorado, under the leadership of openly gay Governor Jared Polis, recently flew the flag of Gays Against Groomers over the state capitol. This honor was granted through a paid state program that allows individuals or organizations to request a flag and a certificate from the governor's office. Gays Against Groomers is labeled as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). The flag was accompanied by a message dictated by Gays Against Groomers, thanking them "for all of its work to protect children." However, the SPLC has stated that the group "amplifies dehumanizing anti-trans rhetoric and perpetuates anti-LGBTQ+ stereotypes by falsely claiming that LGBTQ+ supporters of trans rights are dangerous to society." In the wake of the backlash, the Colorado government quickly issued a statement indicating that the request for the flag had not been "properly vetted." A spokesperson for Governor Polis reaffirmed the administration's stance against "hate in all its forms." As a result, the paid program has been suspended, at least temporarily. However, Gays Against Groomers has capitalized on the situation, posting an image of the certificate on social media, expressing gratitude to Governor Polis. #Queer Up The USA View
