Dominica's High Court Overturns Law Criminalizing Same-Sex Relationships

Dominica's High Court has made history by overturning the nation's long-standing ban on consensual same-sex activity, rooted in colonial-era laws. Ruling sections 14 and 16 of the 1998 Sexual Offences Act as unconstitutional, the court deemed criminalization of adult same-sex activity a violation of constitutional rights. Before this ruling, both male and female same-sex activity, along with anal sex among heterosexual couples, carried severe penalties, including up to 12 years' imprisonment and compulsory psychiatric treatment. Justice Kimberly Cenac-Phulgence passed this historic ruling. LGBTQ+ activists in Dominica celebrate the landmark change. The Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality lauds the ruling as a triumph for liberty, expression, and privacy. #Queer Up The World View
