Education Department Says Georgia May Have Violated Student Civil Rights With Book Ban

The Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) last week announced that a Georgia school district may have violated students’ civil rights by removing books that contained characters who were people of color or LGBTQ+. The office concluded its investigation into Forsyth County School District after the school put restrictions on more than a dozen books in 2022 due to parents’ complaints. The department interviewed staff from the school, reviewed meetings regarding the book removals, and looked through documents from the district and parents. Debates over schoolbook bans have increased in recent years, particularly in Florida, where DeSantis’s education overhauls have drawn national scrutiny. #Queer Up Education
