In 1960s Mexico City, amidst a predominantly Roman Catholic, machismo culture and a repressive government, El Safari stood as the country’s only gay bar. Located at the corner of Havre and Hamburgo streets, it featured exotic decor and drag performances. Despite police raids and attacks on queer spaces, El Safari survived until 1966, thanks to its owner, Fernando Romero, the rumoured closeted chief of the Judicial Police. #Queer Up The World View
