Jen Cousins remembers the exact moment she decided to stop Moms for Liberty when during a school board meeting in Orange County last year, one Proud Boys member Jacob Engals read Gender Queer completely out of context, creating chaos which she had to witness with her 12 years old non-binary child by her side. Jen knew that one member of the extremist “parental rights” group Moms for Liberty, Alicia Farrant, gave that book it Jacob. After the book was banned in Orange County, Cousins joined with Stephana Ferrell, a mom to two biracial children to create the Florida Freedom to Read Project to combat the banning of books from Florida’s libraries, and the work of groups like Moms for Liberty, which has caused bans of hundreds of pro-LGBTQ+ books from school libraries.
