Goodbye To Governor Ron DeSantis. For Now

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis bet his presidential aspirations on a strong finish in the Iowa caucuses. After Monday night, his future is in significant jeopardy. With 95% of the expected votes in, DeSantis did not lead in a single of the state's 99 counties. Instead, his biggest success of the night was holding onto second place in the face of former UN ambassador Nikki Haley's stiff challenge. On the other hand, Donald Trump won the Iowa caucuses in a landslide, solidifying his status as the race’s clear frontrunner. With most of the votes counted from precincts across the Midwestern state, Trump was on course to win more than 51 percent. DeSantis and his allied super PACs expended significant resources on competing in Iowa. The Florida governor visited all of the state's 99 counties before the caucuses, a feat named after veteran Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. DeSantis also wielded major endorsements, including from Gov. Kim Reynolds and key evangelical leaders like Bob Vander Plaats. DeSantis also spent nearly $2000 a vote in Iowa. $35 million in advertising and $10 million in campaign structure. But the grand spend of $45 million acquired him only 23,420 votes. Trump’s victory, on the other hand, showed his continued grip on the Republican party, with voters backing a man facing dozens of federal criminal charges. In a speech to the supporters, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis promised to continue fighting. However, only time will tell what all DeSantis will be served in the political buffet of 2024.
