Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation’s Research Highlights LGBTQ+ Discrimination in Health Care

New research from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) sheds light on disparities in healthcare experiences between LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ adults. The study reveals a stark contrast: LGBTQ+ individuals are twice as likely to report negative encounters while seeking healthcare. Of those surveyed, 61% of LGBTQ+ adults recounted adverse experiences in the last three years, compared to only 31% of non-LGBTQ+ adults. These negative experiences included making personal assumptions without asking, ignoring direct questions or requests, and refusing to prescribe pain medication. Around 24% of LGBTQ+ people said these negative experiences made their health worse, compared to 9% of non-LGBTQ+ adults. Discrimination in healthcare negatively affects those LGBTQ+ who are lower income, younger, women, and Black and Hispanic. #Queer Up Health
