Island City Stage in Wilton Manors, GableStage in Coral Gables, and Brévo Theatre in Pompano Beach have received a generous $250,000 grant from the Warten Foundation. The grant is designated to produce "Fat Ham," the acclaimed 2022 Pulitzer Prize-winning play by James Ijames, in South Florida. This collaboration marks the first-time partnership among these leading theater groups in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The Warten Foundation, established in memory of Fredrick Warten, advocates for social justice and LGBTQ+ rights while supporting arts and education excellence. Island City Stage, founded in 2012, shares diverse LGBTQ+ narratives. GableStage, running since 1979, is honored with numerous awards. While Brévo Theatre is known for uplifting young Black artists and fostering community through impactful storytelling. "Fat Ham" offers a fresh take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, delving into themes of identity, race, and family dynamics. The grant aims to support the full realization of the production across two theaters and attract new audiences. Clifford J. Cideko, chairman of the Warten Foundation, expressed enthusiasm for funding this historic collaboration, emphasizing its potential to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion through the transformative power of live theater. "Fat Ham" is set to debut as a highlight of the 2024-25 seasons for all three theater companies. Starting its inaugural run at Island City Stage in May 2025, the play will then transition to GableStage. Further updates on casting, production details, and the full lineup of plays, programs, and pricing for each theater's 2024-25 season will be announced in the upcoming weeks. #Queer Up South Florida & Florida
