Jason Kelce, former Philadelphia Eagles star and now ESPN analyst, found himself in a viral moment this past weekend at the Penn State vs. Ohio State game. While holding a case of beer and walking through a crowd, Kelce was taunted with homophobic slurs targeting his brother, Travis, who’s currently dating Taylor Swift. One heckler yelled, "Hey Kelce, how does it feel that your brother’s a faggot?" referencing the dating rumors. Kelce reacted, grabbing and smashing the person’s phone, later quipping, "How does it feel to be the faggot now?" However, during ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown, Kelce expressed regret - “I’m not happy with anything that took place. I chose to greet hate with hate, and I don’t think that’s productive.” The homophobic slur used is one of the most incendiary in English, with anti-gay connotations dating back to the early 1900s. Its first recorded use was in the 1914 book called A Vocabulary of Criminal Slang. The slur was used for a homosexual man. Though Kelce’s response was heated, his apology shows his commitment to respect and inclusivity moving forward. #Queer Up Gay Culture
