Queer wheelchair tennis star Lucy Shuker was the flag-bearer for the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Shuker, who is one of Britain’s most successful wheelchair tennis players, followed the path of LGBTQ icon Tom Daley, who was a flag-bearer for Team GB at the Paris Olympics earlier this year. The 44-year-old athlete shared the honor with wheelchair basketball player Terry Bywater, as the pair carried the British flag at the opening ceremony on August 28 at Place de la Concorde. Shuker, who has competed in every Summer Paralympics since 2008 and won a silver medal in Tokyo, expressed her excitement. She said, “It’s an incredible honor. When I was asked to be put forward, I thought that’s as good as it gets. But when I found out a couple of days ago, it’s mindblowing.” Shuker’s selection, along with Bywater’s, was made by their teammates. ParalympicsGB chef de mission Penny Briscoe praised both athletes, saying, “It underlines just how much both athletes epitomize the Paralympic values that we as a team are so proud of.” The Paris 2024 Paralympics began on August 28 and will continue till September 8. #Queer Up Sports
