Michigan Bans LGBTQ Panic Defense

Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a bill banning the “LGBTQ+ panic” defense, which historically justified attacks based on someone’s identity. Whitmer, one of the possible running mates for presidential candidate Kamala Harris, signed 39 bills on July 23, making Michigan the 20th state to end this defense. Florida banned it last year. Whitmer’s action is part of her effort to make Michigan safer for the queer community. #Queer Up Politics
