New Jersey City Aide Fired After Donations to Anti-Gay Sister’s Campaign

Jonathan Gomez-Noriega, who served as an aide to Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and was a member of the city's LGBTQ+ Task Force, has been dismissed from his position after it emerged that he donated to his sister's campaign. His sister, Valentina Gomez, is a right-wing Republican candidate for secretary of state in Missouri known for her antigay rhetoric and derogatory social media posts. Gomez-Noriega resigned from the LGBTQ+ Task Force on Monday. However, Valentina has condemned Mayor Fulop in the video, posted on Monday, for forcing her brother to choose between his family and his job. The controversy began earlier on Monday when the Hudson Pride Center, a leading LGBTQ+ advocacy group in Jersey City, announced the mass resignation of its staff from the city’s LGBTQ+ Task Force. The group’s executive director, Elizabeth Schedl, issued a strong statement condemning Gomez-Noriega’s silence and financial support of his sister’s campaign, calling it “unacceptable and contrary to the values of inclusivity and respect that we strive to uphold.” The review of campaign contribution records by The Advocate shows that Gomez-Noriega made four donations to his sister’s campaign: $150 in October 2023, $100 in February, $500 in April, and $500 on July 12, amounting to a total of $1,250. #Queer Up The USA View
