In July 2020, Michael Grassi received an unexpected call from Greg Berlanti, offering him the opportunity to create a TV show based on the life of renowned gay neurologist and author Oliver Sacks. Initially hesitant, Grassi, known for Pretty Little Liars and Degrassi, soon became captivated by Sacks’ compassionate storytelling. He says, “I fell in love with Oliver Sacks.” Brilliant Minds premieres on NBC this fall, starring gay actor Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf. Like Sacks, Wolf is an outsider who humanizes medicine. Talking about the cast, Grassi, who is also gay, reflects, “This is the kind of representation I wish I had growing up.” The show explores medical conditions, mental health, and the complexities of identity. He says, “I think Wolf helps patients who feel ‘other’ because he… has also felt ‘other’ at times,” touching on a theme that resonates with many queer individuals. Grassi takes pride in the diversity of the ensemble cast. One standout relationship featured in the show is between Wolf and Dr. Carol Pierce, played by Tamberla Perry. Grassi says, “It’s really satisfying to watch Tamberla and Zach go toe-to-toe in scenes. They’re really fun together, and their chemistry is incredible.” Brilliant Minds is set to break new ground in representation and empathy. #Queer Up Entertainment
