Development has momentum after years of gridlock. In this week’s Out South Florida, available online and on stands now, I break down our exclusive survey that takes the temperature of residents on a proposed hotel. 63% of respondents support the proposed Wilton Hotel and Pool Club on Dixie Highway by Five Points. It would be a 123-room boutique hotel. Location aside, 73% support a hotel *somewhere* in the city. The current proposal is still being examined by the city to make sure it complies with the city’s code, but it has strong support from all members of the city commission. I’ve been following Wilton issues for a long time, and this, along with the proposed WilMa project by Alibi, is as close as we’ve come to projects that will redefine the city. Will they enhance or ruin the city’s skyline? Will they over-gentrify and erase the LGBTQ+ influence that defines the city? Or will it make us even more LGBTQ+? Will it cut down on problematic vacation rentals? These aren’t just questions for Wilton Manors. They face every remaining Gayborhood in North America and Europe. Wilton Manors can be a leader in showing other cities how it’s done. The effects of upcoming votes won’t be felt for years. We only have one chance to get it right. #Queer Up Out South Florida
