Popular Queer Iraqi TikToker Shot During Anti-LGBTQ+ Crackdown

CNN reports the death of a popular queer Iraqi TikTok personality who was shot dead in Baghdad. On social media, she was known as Noor BM. The 23-year-old Noor Alsaffar mostly posted short videos showing dresses, hair, and makeup styles, often while dancing to music. Following news of the shooting, many posted comments lamenting Alsaffar’s death. An Iraqi security source told CNN that the investigation has started. The killing comes as Iraq cracks down on LGBTQ+ expression and moves to criminalize it in law. Alsaffar had often faced online abuse for cross-dressing, as well as questions about sexuality and gender. In a 2020 interview on Iraq’s Al Walaa channel, Alsaffar said he identified as a male who worked as a model and makeup artist. #Queer Up The World View
