When Luka Cai moved to St. Louis from Singapore in 2016, the Tivoli Theater was a special place. For Cai and several other members of St. Louis’ LGBTQ+ community, Tivoli Theater in the Loop was one of a dwindling number of safe spaces to be openly queer. That is, before the theater’s then-owner, Joe Edwards, sold the building to a church. St. Louis' queer community was upset with this transaction. But, it was even more upset when it learned about One Family Church's opposition to same-sex relationships and non-cisgender identities. For years, One Family Church had rented out the Tivoli for weekly services. But as Edwards decided to unload properties in the Loop, the church purchased it. The church is committed to showing movies in the theater again, but it will not screen movies with LGBTQ+ characters or themes, given its stance on queer identity. And while the theater was once known for its Rocky Horror Picture Show performances, the church had no interest in resuming that. So all the people who are upset about Tivoli's current direction plan to dress up as flamboyantly as possible and put their pride on full display in a protest in front of the theater. The rally will start at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 6, and end around 8 p.m. #Queer Up Entertainment
