Queer Librarian Emily Drabinski's Tireless Efforts Against Library Censorship

In the face of escalating challenges to intellectual freedom and access to information, Emily Drabinski, a stalwart advocate for libraries and LGBTQ+ rights, continues to spearhead a transformative movement within the American Library Association (ALA). Running for the presidency of ALA last year, Drabinski made it her mission to highlight the crucial role libraries play in society. With book bans reaching record highs and libraries under threat of closure, she remains undeterred in her pursuit of equitable access to knowledge. In a candid conversation with LGBTQ Nation, Drabinski revealed the deeply personal nature of her advocacy. As an openly out lesbian, she has found herself a target of attacks amid the onslaught of censorship targeting LGBTQ+ literature. Yet, she remains resolute. Under her stewardship, the ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom diligently documents instances of censorship, while the Unite Against Book Bans campaign equips advocates with the tools needed to defend the right to read. Drabinski's proactive approach extends beyond rhetoric, as she travels extensively to engage with librarians nationwide and has established a task force dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ library workers. Drawing from her own experiences of facing personal attacks, she emphasizes the importance of visibility and solidarity within the LGBTQ+ community. #Queer Up Gay Culture
