Rainbow Watch Bands Made By Swatch Confiscated By Authorities In Malaysia

Rainbow-colored watches made by Swatch Group that celebrate LGBTQ+ rights have been confiscated by authorities in Malaysia. The watches belong to the company's "Pride Collection" which was created to celebrate the pride movement and its message of equality and diversity. On May 13 and 14, Malaysia's Ministry of Internal Affairs seized the Swatch watches during raids. Swatch Group Chief Executive Nick Hayek said he was disappointed and concerned. The company uses rainbow colors in its special edition watch, which has a special message of peace and love. The rainbow flag is a symbol of the LGBTQ+ movement, which supports the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, Queer, and intersex people. Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reported the company said it would take legal action to recover the goods from the Malaysian authorities. Swatch's marketing manager in Malaysia, Sarah Kok, said stock of the rainbow watches would be replenished and displayed on-shelf. The Swiss watchmaker has said Malaysian authorities seized 164 rainbow-colored watches worth a total of US $14,000. The seizure was based on the Printing Presses and Publications Act of 1984, which critics condemn as draconian. The law is often used to ensure content does not offend or undermine race relations. #Queer Up Business
