Sweet Briar College, a Virginia liberal arts institution, has barred transgender applicants, citing founder Indiana Fletcher Williams’s 1900 will. The will stipulated that the college would serve "girls and young women," and the current administrators believe that the will must be interpreted in its original context. Previously, Sweet Briar evaluated trans applicants individually. Now, applicants must confirm their birth sex as female and consistently identify as women. However, the college has previously diverged from the will's strict interpretation. Originally, the will mandated admitting only white students. In 1964, Sweet Briar sought state approval to integrate. The college admitted its first Black students under a temporary court order in 1966, and the whites-only policy was permanently overturned in 1967 by the courts. Then why not make the same effort now? #Trans Rights
