Thirty One Republicans File Challenge To Tennessee's Transgender Care Ban

More than 30 Republican officials filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court opposing Tennessee’s ban on transition-related care for minors. The signatories, including former Republican members of Congress, argue the state is infringing on parental rights by preventing informed medical decisions. The brief states, “States have no business overruling the decisions of fit parents who make an informed medical choice for their children.” The case, L.W. v. Skrmetti, challenges Tennessee’s law amid growing efforts by GOP lawmakers to restrict trans health care in 26 states. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a former Republican Congresswoman and mother of a transgender son, emphasized, “Parents know what is best for their children, and the government should not stand in the way of well-informed decisions.” The brief also highlights how Tennessee’s law violates the equal protection clause, arguing cisgender children can receive similar medical treatments. Missouri state Representative Chris Sander, one of the signatories, said the issue transcends party politics: “It’s not a partisan thing to be gay or trans.” #Trans Rights
