The University of South Carolina (USC) is under fire for hosting a “comedy roast” of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on September 18. The roast will feature right-wing provocateurs Milo Yiannopoulos and Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnis. The event, scheduled to take place in the Russell House ballroom, has sparked outrage as nearly 24,000 USC students, faculty, and alumni are demanding its cancellation. Yiannopoulos and McInnis, known for their racist and antisemitic rhetoric, will serve as “roast masters” for the event. Kamala Harris will not be attending it. The roast is sponsored by Uncensored America, a group claiming to champion free speech. The group's promotional material, which includes an offensive depiction of Harris with vulgar imagery, has fueled further condemnation. However, USC President Michael Amiridis and Board of Trustees Chairman Thad Westbrook have defended the event, saying, “We do not know what the speakers plan to say during the event, but they have used vulgar language in promotional material, and they have said troubling and offensive things in the past.” Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO, criticized USC’s stance, urging the university to cancel the event. Johnson wrote, “If South Carolina University’s leadership values their Black students, it’s only right they shut this event down.” This incident highlights the need to understand the difference between free speech and maintaining a respectful campus environment. #Queer Up Gay Culture
