Vatican Takes On Anti-LGBTQ+ Laws. Creates Contradictions

The Vatican released a new document on April 8, called "Dignitas Infinita," which was approved by Pope Francis. This 20-page declaration, crafted over five years, covers various topics related to what the Vatican defines as "human dignity" issues. These include poverty, the plight of migrants, violence against women, human trafficking, war, abortion, in vitro fertilization, surrogacy, the death penalty, and gender reassignment surgery. Once more, the document presents conflicting views on LGBTQ+ individuals and their relationship with the Church. While acknowledging the dignity of queer and trans people, it also expresses disapproval of practices such as gender transition surgery, surrogacy, and in vitro fertilization. These methods are commonly used by gay and lesbian couples to start families. At the same time, the document condemns laws that discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals. The document says that the sex assigned at birth is an “irrevocable gift from God”, and any procedure involving sex change poses a risk to “the unique dignity the person has received from the moment of conception.” The document states that individuals who seek self-determination based on gender theory are at risk of falling to the risk of “the age-old temptation to make oneself God.” It appears contradictory considering that as recently as November, Pope Francis expanded the Church's acceptance of transgender individuals by stating that they can undergo baptism and serve as godparents. #Queer Up Religion
