We protested. We partied. Now, we wait. It’s safe to assume Governor DeSantis' toadies, like the so-called Moms For Liberty, infiltrated last weekend’s Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival. With cameras in hand, they were looking for something scandalous they can send to their anti-LGBTQ+ overlords to justify further oppression of our community. A new law to “protect children” had drag entertainers and parade organizers on guard and our enemies on the prowl. New rules were created and old rules were more strictly enforced to avoid anything that could be construed as harmful to a child. “Family Friendly” is the term. But others get to determine what “family” means - and what “friendly” means. There were drag entertainers and people dressed in drag to support but it was very low key. Will it be enough? Will the self-immolation of our own traditions and culture be enough to placate the fascists in Florida? Or, will some out-of-context snap or video be enough to have FDLE send officers here to remove city employees for allowing it? Will the Department of Business and Professional Regulation sneak in and quietly close businesses at the heart of our community? Stonewall Pride is over, but the fight against the evil all around us is just beginning. For now, we wait.
