Wilton Manors Skyline-Changing Choices

More than the city’s skyline is changing. Last night, commissioners unanimously voted for Wilton's biggest, and tallest, developments in years. Generation will go on 24th Street and 13th Avenue, where the Alchemist sits. A mixed use building and parking garage will go in, with a freestanding restaurant, a public dog park, and more. The BIG story of the night was when commissioners approved WilMa On the Drive. The back building at Shoppes of Wilton Manors will be demolished and a parking garage built in its place. The parking lot in front will become a seven-story mixed use building. Wilton Manors faced the choice: expand their tax base.. or raise taxes. New developments, especially rentals, bring top value as assessed value is high and tax revenue isn’t depressed by longtime residents using their homestead exemption. Good. But, at what cost? Most concerns revolve around neighborhood safety in the face of increased traffic and losing the city’s vibe created by LGBTQ+ residents. Development will change this city. For better? For Worse? We won’t know for a long, long time. You are getting a first look at the cover of the new OUT SFL. This and many other stories that are important to the LGBTQ+ community will be available on stands Thursday. #Queer Up Out South Florida
