In Russia, three people faced charges for displaying rainbow symbols in public after the country’s Supreme Court deemed the “international public LGBT movement” an extremist organization last November. These are the first convictions since that unfortunate ruling. On Monday, artist Inna Mosina received a $16 fine for Instagram posts with rainbow flags, despite posting them before the ruling took effect. Last week, a man in Volgograd was fined $11 for posting an LGBTQ+ flag photo. In the third incident, Anastasia Yershova was jailed for five days after a man in a cafe asked her to remove rainbow-colored frog earrings and a Ukrainian flag pin. The interaction was posted on social media and reached the Male State, a radical hate group. Her arrest occurred only after the video was circulated. Yershova’s lawyer said the court didn’t even specify what were the names of the extremist organizations she displayed. In the process of court ruling and arrest, Anastasia's frog-shaped earrings were also examined as they displayed seven-colored rainbows. Aegis, an LGBTQ+ rights group, noted the earrings had seven stripes, unlike the six on the LGBTQ+ flag, suggesting they may not have been intended as LGBTQ+ symbols.
