In Yemen's Ibb province, a Houthi-controlled court has sentenced 13 men to death for same-sex relations, with 35 more arrested. Houthis, backed by Iran, control swathes of Yemen. During 2022 and 2023, a United Nations panel strongly condemned the Houthis for systematic human rights violations in Yemen. The report highlighted a rise in sexual and gender-based violence directed at the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, the UN panel documented instances of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, and other forms of mistreatment against various targeted groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals.
